Hollywood actor and star of TV series, “Better Call Saul”, Patrick Fabian recently appeared on The Glacé Film Club podcast to discuss his new film “The Way We Speak”.
The team behind feature film “The Way We Speak” chat with Callum
Alongside the film’s writer and director, Ian Ebright, as well as co-stars Diana Coconubo, Kailey Rhodes and Ayanna Berkshire, the team behind the film spoke with podcast host Callum Hyde about how the film came into being, the meaning behind the title and the symbolism behind some of the key scenes.
The nearly 50-minute conversation followed on from a conversation Callum and Patrick had on stage at the film’s UK premiere at Worcester Film Festival in September of 2025.
During both conversations, Fabian shed light on the freeing process of working with Ian Ebright on his debut feature, the connection he had with the rest of the cast and how “The Way We Speak” really was a film for the times.

What is the film “The Way We Speak” about?
“The Way We Speak” is the debut feature film for American writer and director, Ian Ebright. The film focuses on an up-and-coming writer (Simon Harrington, played by Patrick Fabian) who refuses to leave the spotlight when his best friend and debate opponent suffers a cardiac arrest, leading to an obsession over his new opponent and a growing rift with his ailing wife.
When a young bestselling Christian essayist (Sarah Clawson played by Kailey Rhodes) is asked to step into the debate at the last minute, the series of increasingly intense showdowns about religion gradually shift the film from abstract discourse to Simon’s personal life.
Through the exploration of Simon’s personal journey and the considerations his debate with Sarah forces him to make, the film asks us as viewers to consider whether how we speak is more important than the arguments themselves.
Is defeating an opponent the ultimate goal or learning our own personal limitations more valuable?
What they discussed during the podcast episode
During the episode, Ian Ebright introduced his film and the inspiration behind it. Independent filmmakers have to go through all sorts in order to get their film off the ground and Ian’s story of writing the script and eventually getting a group of highly talented actors together to bring it to life absolutely gives an insight into the world of independent filmmaking.
Callum’s distinctive analytical and thought provoking style of questioning led to various fascinating exchanges between the cast and Callum himself about how the film investigates the way we talk to each other in the modern world, the fragility of the main character’s masculinity and the role of memory in the film as well as much more.
For those who are interested in how independent feature films are crafted and how top-level directors and actors work together to produce powerful pieces of art, this episode is absolutely for you.
